Seniors: Did you Miss the Herff Jones Meeting on Tuesday??

Seniors who did not attend the Senior Meeting on Tuesday, Sept 30 with Herff Jones representatives should stop by the guidance office and pick up the Herff Jones Cap & Gown and Graduation Information packet.  The fee for cap and gown is $45. Additional items can be ordered as well. Seniors should bring their completed order form to the in-school order days Thursday, October 9th or Tuesday November 4th during lunch. If you have any questions, call 764-9314.

SAT Test Prep Sessions at GSU

Georgia Southern University is offering SAT Test Prep Sessions in two locations...Savannah and Statesboro.  See the information below to choose your session:

This course gives students the necessary practice, thinking strategies and skills development needed for maximizing scores on the math portion of the SAT. Students will review the use of various formulas essential to solving problems and will receive information on effective strategies for increasing the likelihood of answering problems correctly. They will take practice tests in class and will also learn exercises for relieving test anxiety.
Dates: Tuesdays, 9/30/2014 through 11/4/2014 
Time: 6 to 8 p.m.
Location: Coastal Georgia Center, Savannah, GA
Cost: $160 per person; $135 for groups of 3 or more (must register on the same day)
Dates: Tuesdays, 9/30/2014 through 11/4/2014 (skips October 28) 
Time: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Location:  Nessmith-Lane Conference Center, Statesboro, GA
Cost: $145 per person; $130 for groups of 3 or more (must register on the same day)
This course focuses on strategies in active reading that pertain specifically to the SAT, as well as addressing strategies and possible topics for the writing portion. While improving their vocabulary (roots, prefixes, word in context), students will learn to identify key words, recognize main ideas/themes, draw conclusions and make inferences. The writing process will be emphasized and timed writing sessions will be used to help students know what to expect. By improving these skills, students will be able to approach the SAT with confidence and the necessary tools for optimal results.
Dates: Mondays, 9/29/2014 through 11/3/2014 
Time: 6 to 8 p.m.

PSAT Administration at SHS

The PSAT will be administered at SHS on Saturday, October 18, 2014.
The registration deadline is Friday, October 3, 2014 at 3:00 p.m.  Fees will be waived for all 10th grade students only.  There will be a fee of $14 for all 9th and 11th graders.  All fees must be paid to Mrs. Bradley in the Guidance Office by October 3rd.  Please contact Mrs. Love if you have any questions.

Penguin Publishing & Dreamworks Pictures Sign SHS Sophomore

Penguin Publishing and Dreamworks Pictures have signed Statesboro High School Sophomore Maya Van Wagenen, 15, to a two-book and two-movie deals. Her journals of how she navigated her early teen years in a new school in Texas, using Betty Cornell's 1950's self-help book Betty Cornell’s Glamour Guide for Teens will become her first published work, Popular: Vintage Wisdom for the Modern Geek. 

Maya is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Michael S. Van Wagenen.  The family relocated to Bulloch County two years ago, when Dr. Van Wagenen accepted a position with Georgia Southern University's History Department. 

Here are a few of the national stories that chronicle her recent success:  Deadline Hollywood; Parade; NBC News Today; Babble.Com; Publisher's Weekly; New York Post  .  Maya is also one of the featured authors for next week's Statesboro The Write Place Festival at the Averitt Center for the Arts.
