(Approval of minutes listed as first item under “Old Business” on the agenda.)
There were two items under Old Business. The second item on the agenda under Old Business was a follow up from the EOC retake that SHS did in January/February. Ashley Thompson shared that for American Literature, 13 students signed up for remediation; 6 students attended at least one remediation session; 9 students retested; 4 students improved their score by at least 1 point; and 1 student moved from a Level 1 to a Level 2. For US History, 15 students signed up for remediation; 4 students attended at least one remediation session; 15 students retested; 4 students improved their score by at least 1 point; and 1 student moved from a Level 1 to a Level 2. For Biology, 17 students signed up for remediation; 14 students attended at least one remediation session; 15 students retested; 5 students improved their score by at least 1 point; and 2 students moved from a Level 1 to a Level 2. Overall, Principal Keith Wright and School Improvement Specialist, Ashley Thompson, felt like this was a good starting point for future discussions and improvements with EOC testing. The first item under New Business was Principal Updates. In Principal Keith Wright’s update, he mentioned that SHS was awarded as an AP STEM School and an AP STEM Achievement School. SHS was awarded as an AP STEM School for having administered at least 5 exams in each of four separate AP STEM courses and a minimum of 25 total exams administered. SHS was awarded as an AP STEM Achievement School for being a STEM school with at least 50% of all AP STEM exams earning scores of 3 or higher. Principal Keith Wright also explained to school council members how courses are selected at SHS and the possible AP course offerings for the 25-26 school year. Dr. Amy Jo Riggs asked that during Honors/AP Parent Night next year, an explanation about how courses are selected should be mentioned along with highlighted SHS’s AP Honor School Awards. An explanation of why AP Microeconomics will not be offered was also given using the current AP Potential Report and Historical Student Performance Data for that course. Principal Wright then updated the council members on counseling services that SHS offers. A brief explanation of direct vs indirect counseling, the Button project, and outside counseling agencies was given. Dr. Amy Jo Riggs highlighted the fact that SHS students have their counselor for 4 years and this really helps the students, parents and counselors. The last update from Principal Keith Wright was on school safety. SHS is putting up a fence around the perimeter of the school to increase safety for our students from the community.
The second item under New Business was offering E-Sports at SHS. It was shared that all students in grades 9-11 were surveyed during Devil Pride Time. From this survey, over 80 students were interested. E-Sports is a GHSA approved sport so all participants must be eligible according to GHSA guidelines. SHS plans to offer Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the Fall and Rocket League, Madden NFL 25, College Football, and NBA2K25 in the
Spring.
Spring.
The third item under New Business was Senior Signing Day. Parents are invited to attend this event. Students will sign up in Google Classroom to participate. Students who have committed to a specific college, job or military placement are invited to participate. The last item for discussion was the suspension of GPC and Government Travel Cards.
