The Statesboro High School School Council had its second meeting of the 25-26 school year on Monday, November 3 at 5:30 pm in the Media Center at Statesboro High School. Council members present were as follows: Principal Keith Wright, Concella Holder, Dorsey Baldwin, Derek Kreisher, Kevin Harrison, Lesa Brown, Erica Scripture and Ashley Thompson. Cicely Sikes was virtually present through Google Meets. Kendria Lee was not present.
Chairperson Dorsey Baldwin called the meeting to order.
The first item under Old Business was to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Erica Scripture made a motion to approve the minutes from the August meeting and Derek Kreischer seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved from the August meeting.
The second item under Old Business was an update from the School Council on the School Improvement Plan. At the previous meeting, Principal Wright asked the School Council members to look over the School Improvement Plan and bring feedback to the next meeting. Kevin Harrison asked if Teacher Clarity was going to continue, with the budget cuts. Principal Wright and Ashley Thompson updated the members that Teacher Clarity would continue and the plan is to build capacity because of the district office restructuring. Lesa Brown asked about how Statesboro High School teaches Foundations of Algebra and Algebra I.
The first item under New Business was Principal Updates. The first update was an update to parents about Senior Information, Dual Enrollment Night and Honors/Advanced Placement Night. All of this information and answers to Menti Questions are posted on the Statesboro High School Website. The second item was the English Language Arts Work Session that Statesboro High School provided for their teachers. English Language Arts has new standards this year and Statesboro High School admin provided the English Language Arts teachers a Professional Learning Day to unpack their standards and build resources for their units.The next item was the process for parents to engage and ask questions for the School Council. This link is sent to parents in the Parent Newsletter every week. The School Council has only received feedback from two people. The council members suggested that the school posts this link on Social Media close to the meeting date. It was also requested that the school posts at the end of the 9 weeks for parents to check their student’s grades. The fourth item was Senate Bill 351. All Devil Pride Time teachers will show three videos on digital citizenship, online safety, bullying prevention, etc. These videos all include an accompanying lesson plan. These are stand-along lesson plans, provided by the Georgia Department of Education, that are aligned to the same standards/objectives of the videos.These videos/lessons fulfill parts of the “Protecting Georgia’s Children on Social Media Act” (State Bill 351, 2024), which regulates both social media companies and social media use in schools. Specifically, they address Section 2-2 (Online Safety for Grades 6-12) and portions of Section 2-1 (Character Education).
