The Statesboro High School School Council had its second meeting of the 24-25 school year on Monday, October 28, 2024, at 5:30 pm in the Media Center at Statesboro High School. Council members present were as follows: Principal Keith Wright, Concella Holder, Dorsey Baldwin, Derek Kreisher, Talmeshia Parker, Erica Scripture, Amy Jo Riggs, and Ashley Thompson. Cicely Sikes joined the meeting virtually. Kathy Yawn was absent (at flag football game).
Chairperson Dorsey Baldwin called the meeting to order.
Amy Jo Riggs made a motion to approve the minutes from the September meeting and Derek Kreischer seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved from the September meeting.
There were no items under Old Business. Ashley Thompson asked that the council members consider saying something positive about the school at each meeting. All council members agreed. Erica Scripture said that she had people donate money to give seniors a donut if they showed their “I Voted” sticker on election day. Derek Kreischer shared that his Algebra I students are doing a better job at breaking down word problems. Ashley Thompson shared that during the Hurricane, our students were seeking opportunities to help our community. Concella Holder shared that she is having 1 minute meetings with her 9th grade students and is building relationships and making connections with them.
The first item under New Business was Principal Updates. In Principal Keith Wright’s update, he talked about 23-24 EOC data, the State Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board, Make-up/Missing Work dates, Winter EOC dates and a safety update. Principal Wright first showed the EOC data from the 23-24 school year and some trends that the leadership team found. Council members asked about having an award for students that pass the EOC. US History is doing some vertical alignment with content specific vocabulary. Also, all 9th graders are taking Algebra I all year, instead of semester, unless they took the course for high school credit in middle school. Principal Wright also mentioned that we have two students serving on the State Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board this year, Angelica Halaby and Britton Baggarly. The make-up/missing work deadlines were presented as well as the new Winter EOC dates that were pushed back by the state due to multiple school closures this fall from weather. Principal Wright also updated the council members about his meeting with the board members about safety. At SHS, the intercom system and radios need to be updated.
The next item on the agenda was Honors/AP Night. This will be held on November 11 for students in grades 8-11 and their parents.
The third item on the agenda was Homecoming. Ashley Thompson updated the school council about the parade/carnival, pep rally, dance and game.
Dr. Amy Jo Riggs asked about the AP vs Honors weighting. The amount of work that goes into an AP class is significantly more than an Honors class and the weighting should reflect that. There was also concern about the 100 AP Exam Incentive Score. If a student has over a 100 average, it actually hurts their grade to take the AP test.
The next meeting was decided to be on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 5:30 pm in the SHS Media Center.
